There are many things you will need to consider before and after you get married.

The legal age for marriage in Australia is 18 years, if one person only is under 18 years you need to seek permission from the courts before your marriage can take place. If both people are under 18 years of age the marriage will not be permitted.

There are legal documents to be filled out prior to the marriage, the first one is called The Notice of Intended Marriage, and this form must be filled out and lodged with your celebrant no later than one calendar month prior to your wedding date. To complete this form you will need both your birth certificates and if either party has been married before you will also need to produce the divorce/death papers. You will also need 2 witnesses over the age of 18 years.

If the bride is going to change her surname, she will need to apply to Birth Deaths and Marriages for a "Marriage Certificate" this certificate is different to one that is presented to you on the day of your marriage.

Listed below are some of the places that you will need to contact re your change of name.
